Ladies 2009 season review
Intermediate Team 2009
Mullingar Shamrocks Ladies intermediate team finally got promoted to senior status in 2009 after the fourth time of asking. Under the direction of Terry O'Dowd and Peter Leahy the intermediate ladies team were unbeaten in both League and Championship fixtures in 2009. The championship was kick started in July when they met Kilbeggan Shamrocks (who they would later meet in the county final) on a sunny evening in the Harbour Field. This turned out to be a very close encounter and gave a taste of what we would see later on in the championship. The ladies overcame their opponents by a single point that evening. Next up was a tough encounter at home against Moate. In horrible conditions which could have seen the game called off the girls dug deep and came out on top. Both teams battled against the elements and the girls found themselves 5 points down at half time. They came out in the 2nd half however with all guns blazing and produced a massive 15 point turn around to win the game convincingly. With a large gap between competitive games they played many challenge games both within and outside the county. In one particular friendly against local team Clann Na Gael two players Grainne McGloughlin and Shauna Butterly picked up quite serious injuries that would see them out for the rest of the season and receive surgery later on in the year. This was a big blow for the team as the girls were influential players on both the minor and intermediate teams. Thankfully for the management team the ladies panel has become very competitive over the last couple of years which served them well when they easily overcame Athlone in the championship semi final in August. This set up an exciting rematch against Kilbeggan Shamrocks in the county final. Kilbeggan who had been relegated from Senior the previous year were the favourites going into the final, but with hard work and determination the Shamrocks ladies were quietly confident. On Sunday 30th August the ladies played their fourth intermediate final in 8 years in front of a large attendance in Rosemount. With a fine display of football and a never die attitude victory was never in doubt. The celebrations started when team captain Lisa Burke lifted the cup in front of a jubilant Shamrocks support. Finally the girls brought the intermediate title back to the club and will look forward to playing Senior football in 2010. The Ladies then went on to represent Westmeath in the Leinster Junior championship were they easily overcame Dromard of Longford in the quarter final. Unfortunately the season ended with defeat to a strong St. James of Wexford side who went on to contest the all Ireland semi final.
Underage Teams 2009
At underage level the ladies also had championship success at U16 grade. This was a great reward for the hard work and dedication of team manager Kevin Hope. The ladies overcame Tyrellpass in extra time with the last kick of the ball to set up an exciting final against Ballycomoyle. Again this one went right to the wire and thankfully for Shamrocks (and the help of extra time again) they were awarded a last minute penalty which was converted and sealed their victory. Our U12, U14 and Minor teams all reached Semi Finals but were unfortunate to miss out on those final spots. We would like to wish all those girls who were injured in the 2009 season a speedy recovery and we hope to see them togged out in the green and white this coming year. Mullingar Shamrocks Ladies would like to thank all those who helped to make 2009 a very successful year for the club, team managers Terry O'Dowd, Peter Leahy & Kevin Hope, team mentors Marie Burke, Nora Morris, Ann Melody, Mary Morris and Bernie McGloughlin, Michael Burke and John Shaw for their help with training sessions and the Mullingar Shamrocks Football Club for their continued support. Here to an even more success in 2010!!
